Better Over There
Bait and switch with charm intact
Some people are very good with words.
Not good the way a poet is good, or the way someone is good who has spent time thinking carefully about what they mean. Good the way a three-card monte player is good. The hand moves here, your eye goes there, and by the time you look back something is different and you’re not sure when it changed.
I’ve spent some time watching this. The graceful pivot. The reframe. The way a person can take something they did and, with the right words in the right order, turn it into something that happened to them instead. Evasion wearing the vocabulary of healing.
Some people declare that this is self-awareness. It isn’t.
This song is about the light being moved. About the places a person will not stand still, and what that tells you. What no amount of clever language can quite get around.
Better Over There is available here, and on the Epicycles EP.
